Shoot, AI or hybrid: how to choose.

Choose a shoot when the video has to show real people, a real place or a product whose visual accuracy is decisive. Choose AI when you need settings that are impossible to film, many variants or a sustained posting cadence. Hybrid, real footage supplemented by generated shots, suits you when you need both. An AI studio does not replace every shoot, and it is better to know that before requesting a quote.

Does an AI video studio replace a traditional shoot?

Not always. Ryze AI Studios produces with no camera, no set and no casting: that is its method, and also its limit. If your film relies on your team's faces, your workshop or an event that took place, you need to film. The studio does not shoot. It can, however, work from your existing photos and files, with your written consent.

Conversely, some films could never have existed with a camera. The film “Sept Vies”, produced by the studio, spans seven eras, from the Nile to Cannes 2016 by way of Kyoto and the Atlantic of 1492: 263 generated shots, no travel.

What criteria help you choose between a shoot, AI and hybrid?

Your situationShootAIHybrid
Showing the founder, the team, real customersThe right choice.Avoid: a real face requires the person's consent, and the audience expects a real image.Filmed interview, generated illustrative shots.
Showing a real place (shop, building site, factory)The right choice.Poorly suited: the generated place will not be yours.Possible from your photos.
A product where every detail matters (material, size, color)The safest.Possible from your photos, with a shot-by-shot check.Often the best compromise: real product, generated setting.
A distant, historical or imaginary settingCostly or impossible. The right choice.Of little use.
Posting every week on several networksHard to sustain over time. The right choice: one production adapted into 9:16, 16:9, 1:1 and 21:9.Possible if you already have an image library.
Testing several ad hooksEach variant may require reshooting.Well suited: A/B versions included in the brand film offer.Possible.
A recurring face for the brandA real person, with their own schedule and contract.A generated brand character, to be presented as such. The two can coexist.
Proof, reportage, testimonialThe only honest choice.No. A generated image proves nothing. Not for the proof part.

When is a real shoot the best choice?

  • When trust rests on people. A craftsperson, a doctor, a founder: people want to see who is behind it.
  • When you are showing a real result. Before and after, a finished project, a dish served. A generated image would be misleading, and Swiss unfair competition law targets inaccurate or misleading statements about one's services (LCD, art. 3 para. 1 let. b).
  • When the event already has a date. A trade fair, an opening, a concert cannot be regenerated.
  • When the product must be seen in real use, for example clothing being worn or a tool in action.

When is AI the best choice?

  • When the setting costs more than the idea. Another era, another country, an invented world.
  • When you need volume. The site's calculator goes up to 60 videos per month, in 1 to 4 formats.
  • When nothing should depend on the weather, a location or a date to coordinate.
  • When the brand wants a world rather than a reportage: character, world, cinematic tone.

In every case, AI does not remove human work. It shifts it: script, storyboard, shot choice, selection, editing, color grading and sound are still done by people.

Studio, freelancer or self-service tools: which to choose?

The same AI models are available to everyone, for example Runway, Veo or Kling. The difference lies in who writes, who selects and who is accountable for the result. None of the three paths is bad: they meet different needs.

If you want to learn to produce yourself, the studio's methods (video prompts, pipeline, continuity sheets) are shared in the community Ryze Worlds.

What questions should you ask any provider?

  1. Will I approve a script before the images? Without a script, you are paying for trial and error.
  2. Who selects the shots? A human must discard what does not work.
  3. Which rights do I get? Media, duration, territories, paid advertising.
  4. How do you handle real people and third-party brands? The answer to expect: written consent.
  5. Who applies the AI disclosure, and where? See our rights and disclosures guide.
  6. How many variants and with what timeline? Both must be stated in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a brand film without a shoot?

Yes, when the film tells a story, conveys a world or a promise rather than a fact to be proven. The studio writes the script, draws the storyboard, generates the shots, then edits and adds sound. If the film needs to show your premises or your team, plan for real footage.

Can filmed footage be mixed with AI-generated shots?

Yes, that is the hybrid approach. The studio works from your photos and files, with your written consent. It does not shoot footage itself: the filmed images come from you or from a film crew.

What is the human role in an AI production?

Everything except pressing record: scoping the need, writing the script, drawing the storyboard, choosing the model for each shot, selecting the renders, editing, color grading and mixing. At the studio, renders are generated by AI and then reviewed by humans.

Is an AI video cheaper than a shoot?

It depends on the project, and we do not publish a costed comparison. The cost items are not the same: a shoot pays for a crew, locations and shooting days, while an AI production pays for writing, art direction, selection and editing. See our pricing.

Freelancer or studio for an AI video ad?

A freelancer is a good fit for a one-off video with a simple brief. A studio makes sense when you need a written method, consistency over several months or a recurring character. Either way, insist on a script for approval and rights in writing.
